California Window Tint Laws: What to Know in 2026
Before choosing your window tint, understand California’s requirements.
Tint Requirements by Window
Windshield: A top strip is permitted within the placement limits in Vehicle Code §26708(c), which uses a seat-based measurement rather than a universal four-inch rule. Additional restrictions apply to color, lettering, and reflection.
Front side windows: Film must be clear and colorless, transmit at least 88% of visible light, and leave the combined glass and film at 70% or higher while meeting applicable federal glazing standards.
Rear side windows: Any tint darkness is permitted.
Rear windshield: Any tint darkness is permitted, provided the outside mirrors on both sides qualify.
Keep the required signed installation certificate in your vehicle for compliant front-window film.

If your citation qualifies for correction:
Remove or correct the noncompliant tint.
Have a law enforcement officer inspect the vehicle and sign the correction certificate.
Submit proof to the court before your deadline.
Pay the court’s $25 fee per correctable violation.
Removal costs and any inspection fees are separate. Follow the instructions on your citation or court notice.
Medical Exemptions
Medical exemptions do not authorize unrestricted dark tint. California permits qualifying clear, colorless UV-protection film with a licensed dermatologist’s certificate carried by the driver or kept in the vehicle. The 88% film and 70% combined-transmission requirements still apply.
A separate provision allows certain front-side-window sun-screening devices with qualifying physician or optometrist documentation. Those devices cannot be used during darkness and must be removable.
